When I was in high school, I read a book called Diet for a Small Planet by Francis Moore Lappe’.  The book made a lot of sense.  In a nutshell, this is what I took from the book (keep in mind that I was a 16 year-old girl in high school so my mind was probably not entirely focused on academics at the time):

We as humans have the ability to end world hunger!  We are doing it wrong right now but if we change a few things, we can fix it.  You see, for the most part, we are a race of carnivores – we humans eat animals.

When a cow intended for beef is born, we feed it corn and grain until it’s big enough to slaughter and eat.  Just to use easy numbers, let’s say it takes 5,000 pounds of grain and corn to grow a cow big enough to slaughter and eat (I have no idea if that number is accurate and it’s probably WAY OFF – but just for sake of explanation…).  Now, lets say that that cow will yield 100 pounds of eatable beef (again, no clue about my numbers).  So, if we do the math:

5,000 pounds of grain and corn = 100 pounds of eatable beef

Wouldn’t it make more sense for us to eat the grain and corn?

Sounds like an oversimplification but actually, it makes a TON of sense!

I read that book because my high school health teacher forced me to and even though I thought it was interesting and made a lot of sense, I kept right on eating cows!

Fast forward to my mid-30’s.  I’m fat.  I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and I feel full, bloated and tired pretty much all the time.

About 2 years ago I decided to “go vegan.”  I immediately lost weight without really trying.  I know that being vegan is NOT a weight loss diet.  All I can tell you is that I lost weight (about 25 pounds in 3-4 weeks) and have kept it off ever since.  My health has improved dramatically.  My blood pressure and cholesterol are all well below normal for my age and I have energy to spare at the end of the day.  Becoming vegan is the best thing I have ever done for my body, my mind, my being and myself.

I guess in my own very small way I’m helping to try to end world hunger but honestly, I’m vegan because it just works for me.

Veganism ROCKS!
